William Cornelius Edwards
Willie Edwards is one of the five soldiers from Fochriw killed in the last weeks of the war.
He was William Cornelius Edwards, son of Cornelius Edwards and his wife Jane, who was born in Liverpool about 1896. His father, having qualified for his Master certificate in Swansea in 1880, had been Captain of s.s. Bishop Rock but had died at Anchorage, Fochriw on 17 May 1904. His mother, Jane, was the daughter of coal miner William Edwards and his wife, Margaret, she was listed in the family home in Caeglas, 2, Guest Street and 7, Guest Street in the 1871, 1881 and 1891 census returns. By the time of the latter, she was an assistant school mistress. It is not clear how she had met her husband but her marriage to Cornelius Edwards was registered in West Derby registration district (which covered part of Liverpool) in December quarter 1895, and the births of her two sons, William Cornelius and Albert, were registered there in 1896 and 1897. By the time of the 1901 census, Jane, living on her own means, and her two young sons had returned to Fochriw, and were living at 8, Pleasant View. Her mother died before the next census was taken when she, by then working as assistant elementary teacher, her two boys and her widowed father were enumerated in Anchorage, Pleasant View, Fochriw. While Albert was still a schoolboy then, William Cornelius was working as blacksmith’s striker on surface.
William Cornelius Edwards enlisted for war service at Pontlottyn and served as Private 49310 in South Wales Borderers 10th Battalion on Western Front where, aged 22, he was killed in action on 18 September 1918, as reported in Western Mail 12 October 1918. The Unit Diary does not include any mention of casualties on 18 September when 10th was supporting an attack by 114th Brigade near the Fins-Gouzeaucourt road. His grave, IV. C. 9. in Gouzeaucourt New British Cemetery was marked with a cross inscribed with words chosen by his mother: GOD TAKES OUR LOVED ONES FROM OUR HOMES BUT NEVER FROM OUR HEARTS.
