The names are listed alphabetically. In brackets are the names as they appear on the memorial – if they are underlined italics then the name is on the right side of the memorial, all others are on the left side. The 29 names on the right side all appear to have been from Gilfach. Those in black text are World War I casualties, those in brown are World War II casualties. When the Memorial was unveiled in 1923 it had no names. They were added in 2005. Unfortunately no record of who they were has been found, and some we have, as yet, not been able to identify. If you can help please let us know. For photos and more history jump to end.

George and Leonard Bray
Leonard and George Bray were the children of Samuel and Mary Ann Bray. The family came to Gilfach in the early 1890s having previously lived in Herefordshire and Worcestershire. In 1911 they lived at 10 Thomas St., Gilfach with their widowed father Samuel, elder brother Samuel and elder sister Seline. Eldest sister Mabel had married Joseph Carpenter in 1907.
In 1901 the family lived at 11 Thomas St., Gilfach. Father Samuel was a widower and George was not recorded. A Mary Ann Bray, aged 40, was recorded as having died in Merthyr Tydfil Registration District in the December quarter of 1899 and it is likely she was the mother of the children. George was evidently born about this date but his birth registration has not been found. It is likely that at the time of the 1901 census infant George was being looked after by another family member. Leonard was born in Gilfach in March quarter 1897.
Little is known of their war records, although reference to their respective Regimental Archives may reveal more. Leonard arrived in France February 13 1915 as Bugler with 1st Battalion Monmouthshire Regiment and was killed in action 2 months later. All that is known of George’s war record is that he enlisted in Cardiff, joined the Machine Gun Corps and was killed in action October 24 1918 when only 19. Neither has a known grave, Leonard is commemorated on Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium and George on Loos Memorial, Pas de Callais, France.
Elder brother Samuel also served. He enlisted August 20 1915 and joined Regiment of Artillery (R.H & R.F.A). He served as Driver 105246 in France from March 23 1916 to December 30 1918 and was demobilized January 1919. His address and that of his father was given as 20 North Rd., Bargoed where his elder sister lived.

William Alfred Clevey
William Alfred Clevey was born 7th May 1923 to Florence and Thomas Clevey of Deri Newydd. He was educated at Deri Primary School and Bargoed Grammar School. William, or Bill as he was known, was the middle of five children, Janie and Ted being the elder and Joan and Kenneth being the younger siblings.
At the age of 20 he joined the Royal Air Force and volunteered for Bomber Command, a particularly brave decision as it was well established that the chances of survival were slim with 75% causality including 50% fatalities. After his basic training he was transferred to specialist training as radio operator and air gunner. Bill’s first posting to active service was flying night missions over occupied France, Netherlands and Germany in a twin engined Wellington bomber. He later joined 576 Squadron, at Elsom Wolds, which was being equipped with four engined Lancaster bombers. While on leave he married Rose Hannah Hughes from Gwerthonor Road, Gilfach.
Early in May 1944 Bill was transferred to 103 Squadron which was also based at Elsom Wolds. His new pilot was Squadron Leader Leonard Ollier DFC, AFM. RAF records of his final mission, on 28 May 1944, show he was in Lancaster ND362 PM-Q (call sign Q for Queenie) targeting the railway system outside the city of Aachen, Germany. The purpose of the mission was to cut the railway communications to the West, thus preventing German reinforcements reaching the D Day landing beaches due just a few days later. Apparently, bombs were successfully dropped on target but no further communications were received from the aircraft. Both British and German attempts to discover the fate of the aircraft failed to find any form of wreckage and it has to be assumed that they were either attacked by German night fighters that were known to be active over the North Sea, or that the aircraft was hit by heavy flak (anti aircraft fire) on the Dutch coast (which also claimed another aircraft from the same squadron returning home). It was usual to receive a distress radio message from a bomber under attack or in trouble. As radio operator this would have been the responsibility of Bill Clevey. However there was no message. It has been officially assumed that either the aircraft exploded from a direct hit or the radio operator was wounded or killed.

In February 1918 this Battalion had been moved to serve with 56 Brigade, 19 (Western) Division.

On enlistment Henry was living at 71 Greenfield Street, Bargoed. He married Florence Amelia Smith (born in 1887) on 1 January 1912 in Tredunnoch, her home village. On November 13, while 5 miles off the coast of Kos, Dulverton was attacked by German Do 217 aircraft using Hs 293 glider bombs, one of which struck Dulverton abreast of the bridge, inflicting serious damage and starting extensive fires. David Morris
An able and experienced seaman who was master of the British tramp steamer ‘Ashbury’, 59 year old David Morris lost his life when the vessel foundered and sank January 8 1945 at the entrance of Kyle of Tongue (on far north coast in Sutherland).
In October 1944, ‘Ashbury’, en route to Mediterranean, experienced considerable trouble with the ship’s condenser and, at Gibraltar, Captain Morris received instructions to return to UK for its repair. After unloading a cargo of iron ore at Workington (Cumbria), Morris left that port December 31 1944 for a yard on river Tyne where the work would be carried out. Being under Admiralty Control during a critical period of the war, the vessel was ordered to sail in Convoy WN-667 on a northerly route from Workington via Loch Ewe, where, in company with other ships of the convoy, she lay at anchor. The weather steadily deteriorated and, while at this anchorage, ‘Ashbury’ required assistance as she lost one of her anchors in the winter storm. Proceding on January 6, the weather steadily worsened reaching force 9 with snow showers and low visibility. ‘Ashbury’ ran aground and foundered near Black Rocks, Talmine Skerries, and, with the loss of all 42 men on board, it was a tragic and unnecessary loss of life that proved to be the worst loss of a merchant ship during World War II in an incident not caused by enemy action.
Twenty five of the twenty six bodies recovered from the shoreline were identified, of which fourteen were buried in war graves in Thurso Cemetery while eleven were claimed by their next of kin. Fifteen, including Master David Morris, had no grave but the sea and their names are remembered on Tower Hill memorial, together with two others, making total of seventeen names under heading ‘Ashbury’.
It is unclear why two of the bodies were buried at Tongue (some 35 miles away from the scene of the incident) while fourteen were buried at Thurso. One of the two bodies buried at Tongue was unidentified but the other was James Thomas Addicott, ship’s third Engineer of Roath, Cardiff.
Research by Roy Smith, with thanks to Rory D. Wilson, Projects Officer, Marine Accident Investigation Branch, Mountbatten House, Southampton (for permission to use text from Board of Trade wreck report on loss of ship Ashbury) and to members of Scottish War Memorials Project.
